Raising the Bar

The Navy recently updated its official SEAL/SWCC website to include a PST calculator with which prospective  applicants can measure their fitness level against a successful Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL class.  Entering one's personal best scores on five measures of fitness yields percentile-rankings on each challenge as well as a polite summary on how you'd probably do (statistically speaking) at BUD/S.

After entering my personal scores, the calculator informed me that my "PST score meets the requirements for BUD/S..." but that I had plenty of work to do before I'd be at all competitive.  In a class of 100, I would rank 4th on the swim!  But I'd come in 91st on the run.  This is no real surprise to me, as there's still snow on the ground in Wyoming, and all of my run workouts have thus far been replaced by a swim.  On sit-ups, chin-ups, and push-ups; I came in 18th, 24th, and 86th, respectively.

From this new information, I have determined two things:

  1. I am adjusting my final fitness goals to rank 1st on all five measures of fitness at BUD/S.  These standards are a shade more challenging than my origial goal of Outstanding-High score on the Navy physical readiness standard.
  2. My weakest events are the run and push-ups.
My new goals are:

  • 500yd Swim in 7:33 (currently 8:20, 0:47 slow)
  • 108 Push-Ups in 2:00 (currently 67, 41 short)
  • 103 Sit-Ups in 2:00 (currently 85, 18 short)
  • 26 Chin-Ups (currently 17, 9 short)
  • 1.5mi Run in 8:32 (currently 11:54, 3:22 slow)
