I've gained over 15 pounds! By lifting every other day and drinking a gallon of whole milk every day (yuck!), I have increased my mass by 10%! About eight of those pounds are fat, five are water, and two are muscle. My squat, bench press, and overhead press are all up to 100 pounds, and I'm kind of stalled until I buy more weights.
I was planning to put on another five pounds before going into cutting phase; but the weather is finally nice enough to run, I'm sick of milk, and I'm out of weight plates. I'm going to roll back into the Navy Special Warfare physical training program -- probably doing Weeks Eight and Nine over again.
Quitting the gallon of milk a day will pretty much halve my intake. That -- combined with miles of running and swimming -- should pull my body-fat back down from 17% without decreasing too much of my new muscle mass.
I have learned a lot about what is possible with discipline and drive. I have always been a "hardgainer." I had no idea I could gain three pounds per week with so little extra effort. I started the GOMAD and StrongLifts 5x5 programs in the wrong season. They would make a great Fall/Winter bulking combo when paired with something like the SEAL program for Spring/Summer cutting. I may try for a 30-pound gain over the winter!
But for now it's time to lighten up and get fast and lean. I have a few races this summer, and it's beach season, so let's get cut!
